Who wants to find an easy way to lose weight and keep it off, while maintaining a high energy level? Me! I’m definitely raising my hand!
One of the best ways to do this is to find healthy ways to raise your metabolism. Metabolism is the term for all the biochemical processes that your body goes through to convert food to energy. A fast metabolism means that you will burn more calories, making it easier to lose weight!
If you are looking for ways to increase your metabolism, you have come to the right place! Here are 11 easy ways to increase your metabolism.
1.) Don’t Skip Breakfast
You should be eating breakfast every single day! I know the mornings are usually rushed and it is easy to skip breakfast. But if you don’t eat until lunch, your body will slow down your metabolism! Your body is always on alert, looking for signs of danger. When you don’t eat, it puts your body into “Fasting Mode” and slows your metabolism to conserve energy.
Ideally, you should eat a hearty breakfast. Perhaps two eggs and a whole grain toast. If you need a quick lunch, try eating a quick bowl of cereal, a whole-grain toast, or some fruit and yogurt.
Don’t forget this first meal of the day! You will have a much greater chance of burning off calories and maintaining a healthy weight.
Pro Tip: When I was commuting to work, I would boil 3 eggs while I was getting ready for work, peel them, and pop the egg whites in a bag. I would grab some fruit and a small container of greek yogurt. While commuting in traffic, I would eat my breakfast.
2.) Drink Cold Water
By now, you should know that you are suppose to drink a minimum of 2 liters of water per day – that is 8 large glasses of water.
To really increase your metabolism, drink 12 glasses of cold water daily! Drinking water will act as an appetite suppressant, discouraging you from eating and drinking unnecessary amounts of food and sugary drinks.
But here is the real secret! If you drink your water cold, your body has to use more energy to heat it up to body temperature.
The only down side is that you will have to embrace going to the restroom more often! However, the health benefits of water far supersede any the inconvenience of having to empty your bladder a few more times.
Pro Tip: Try to drink 3 liters of water daily! If you work out in the afternoon and evening, start chugging water a few hours before. Working out while your metabolism is raised is a great way to burn extra calories.
3.) Incorporate Protein Into Every Meal
Foods that are high in protein are more difficult for the body to break down and digest. As a result, it leaves your stomach feeling satisfied longer.
This doesn’t mean that you should switch to only a high-protein diet, since carbs are a huge source of energy while working out. However, you should try to incorporate some lean protein into most meals.
Amazing sources of protein include almonds, oats, egg and egg substitutes, lentils, beans, tofu, fish, lead red meat, and skinless chicken or turkey breast.
4.) Eat At The Same Time Every Day
Did you know your body has an internal body clock that thrives on your routines? In fact, eating meals at irregular times can lead to weight gain – one of the main contributors being a slowed metabolism.
I try to eat breakfast at 6:30 a.m., lunch around 1:00 p.m., and dinner at 6:30 p.m. If I feel hungry between these meals, I eat a nutritional snack like almonds, apples and peanut butter, or some veggies.
Although our busy lives often make it difficult to stick to a perfect meal schedule, try to remain as consistent as possible. If you know you will be late for a meal, try to always give your body a small snack.
5.) Drink Coffee
Congratulations to all the coffee drinkers out there! Coffee is one of the best drinks for boosting your metabolism!
Caffeine increases fat burning and has a positive effect on sustainable weight loss. However, if you love sugar or calorie-laden creamer, you are destroying the health benefits of coffee. So, go easy on the sugar!
6.) Exercise – Even A Little
As you get older, it becomes increasingly difficult to increase your metabolism. That is why creating a healthy habit of working out is so important!
After your evening meal, don’t sit down in front of the TV right away! Go for a 15-30 minute walk instead. If you are looking for easy weight loss tips, walking is a moderate form of exercise, burning a few calories and preventing muscle loss.
If you work out regularly, try to kick it up a notch! High intensity workouts cause your body to work harder to repair your muscle tissue, which is a good thing. This repair process actually boosts your metabolism!

7.) Start A Sleep Routine
Do you go to bed “when you feel like it?” If you have an uneven sleep pattern, you are actually lowering your metabolism. Our bodies THRIVE on patterns and consistency. Lack of sleep causes chronic fatigue, headaches, and weight gain.
Change up your evening schedule and make it a priority to get 7-8 hours of sleep each night. Anything less should be considered a short-term necessity.
Take this 2-week challenge! Go to bed at the same time every night and try to get 8 hours of sleep. See how your body responds to the extra rest and consistent sleep schedule. I guarantee that you will feel more rested!
8.) Nibble On Dark Chocolate
Just like coffee, dark chocolate also contains caffeine – a metabolism boosting compound.
Satisfy your sweet tooth with this healthy snack! Just remember that you can have too much of a good thing. Limit yourself to 1-2 oz per day, so you don’t consume too many fatty calories.
9.) Drink Green Tea
If you prefer tea over coffee, you are in luck! Tea actually has more metabolism-raising power than coffee.
Green tea is an amazing beverage that converts body fat into energy. (There is a scientific way to say that, but I made it simple for you.) So, steep your tea for about 3 minutes daily and drink it hot for maximum effect.
10.) Go Organic
Although the price of organic food is always higher, its benefits are often worth it! Fresh produce (my favorite) is always full of pesticides that expose your body to toxins that keep your body from burning as much fat.
Since food is the #1 alterator of our metabolic rate, pesticide-filled food can have seriously negative consequences. Switching to organic food is highly recommended for a healthy diet that boosts your metabolism.
11.) Take Supplements
Yes, health supplements can help to boost your metabolism! They do so through a process called thermogenesis, which drives up heat in your body, which also increases your metabolism.
Although most supplements can be found in what we eat, our bodies often need more than they can extract from today’s overly-processed food. Find out what supplements I take in this article.
